  • Does Lockstar offer emergency service?

Obviously, you have no control over when you might need a locksmith for a lockout, rekey or repair. Lockstar offers emergency services during normal work hours (M-F 8-6, Sat-Sun 10-4). Telephone consultations are also often available outside of these hours. If you find yourself in need of emergency service and Lockstar is unavailable, the best place to find another reputable locksmith is on our association website (findalocksmith.com), where you have the best chance of locating a locksmith that can be trusted to handle your situation with skill and professionalism.

  • What is the difference between rekeying a lock and replacing it?

If a lock is functional and otherwise meets your needs, and you just want to change the key that operates it, the most economical approach is to rekey it. This involves disassembling the lock and changing the configuration of the interior components that match up with the key that allows the plug to turn. A new key that is significantly different than the original key will be  generated according to manufacturer specifications, and the original key will no longer operate the lock. This option is most option appropriate when taking over a new property or when a key has been compromised.

If your hardware is not working or doesn't meet your functional or aesthetic preferences, a replacement might be in order. Lockstar will work with you to gather your requirements, identify the best solution for your needs, and provide a quote. Lockstar offers full design consultations, hardware sourcing and installation as well. If you are interested in exploring one of these services, simply reach out!

  • What questions should I ask when scheduling locksmith service?

As a consumer, you have every right to be assured that the service provider you're hiring is capable and trustworthy. Here are some questions you might consider asking:

--"Do you have experience providing the specific service I need?"
--"How long have you been in the industry? How long have you served my area?"
--"Do you have any professional credentials? "
--"Are you licensed, insured and/or bonded?"

--"Can you provide a flat-rate quote up front?"
--"Can you perform the service without damaging my lock or my door?"
--"What type of warranty or guarantee can you offer?"
--"What type of identification is required to gain access to my property?"
--"When can you arrive for the service?"

--"What type of vehicle will you be arriving in, and is it marked with your logo?"

Receiving satisfactory answers to these and other questions will go a long way toward reassuring you of your hiring decision. Always go with your gut, and steer clear of red flags thrown by scammers (impersonal call center dispatchers; refusal to provide a clear quote up front; bait and switch tactics involving questionable deviations from the quote; requests for full payment in advance). In the end, you'll invariably get the best service from locally owned and verifiable small businesses like Lockstar that treat you with patience and respect.
